Ram Navami Vrat Katha

King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had three wives, Kaushalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi. However, none of them could give birth to a son. The king desired a child who could inherit his throne and take care of the empire. Many years passed after marriage but I did not get the fortune of becoming a father.

Later, the famous sage Vashishtha suggested the king conduct Putra Kameshthi Yagya, a sacred ritual that can bless the child. King Dasharatha allowed Maharishi Rushya Shringa to perform the Yagya in the most elaborate manner possible. The king was given a bowl of payasam (a sweet made from milk and rice) and requested to share it among his wives.

The king gave half of the sweets kept in the bowl to his wife Kaushalya and, the other half to his wife Kaikeyi. These two wives distributed half of their food among Sumitra. This unequal sharing of the sacred Payasam resulted in the birth of a son each to Kausalya and Kaikeyi. However, Sumitra gave birth to twin sons.

The celebration in Ayodhya reached, its peak due to the glory of this day. Everyone living there, including the royal family, heaved a sigh of relief and expressed gratitude to God for the miracle. Little did they know that God himself was gifting them the gift in the form of Kaushalya’s newborn son Lord Ram.
